At the moove shake HQ in Cardiff, we have collected dozens of pictures of mould all over Cathays and in the winter months it has clearly become an ever growing problem.

Mould grows on walls that are damp - like walls with gutters on the outside or walls next to bathrooms/showers. This is a design fault of your house.

It is not your fault!

The health effects of mould can be extremely negative…

and not something that should be tolerated as a student renter!

How mould puts you in danger….

The prolonged presence of mould can lead people to inhale tiny toxic spores that cause a condition called mycotoxicosis — mould poisoning.

This comes from black mould, a type of fungus that grows on walls. However, there is no significant scientific evidence to say black mould is significantly worse than any other type of indoor mould so it is best to avoid all mould.

What are the side effects of mould poisoning ?

• watery, red eyes

• a dry cough

• skin rashes

• a sore throat

• sinusitis

• wheezing

• asthma attacks

• Respiratory infections

What can we do to fight mould !

There are 3 different ways we can keep mould out of our lives!

Firstly, if you are moving next year, make sure to avoid houses with any mould!

However, if it is too late and you now live in a house with a disgusting black walls this is no laughing matter.

Get in touch with your landlord and stress the significance to your health. Make sure to let your letting agent know too. Hopefully they should come and fix it !

Finally, if you are unlucky like me and you have rented with a Letting Agent that could give a CPS about you then you might need to take matters into your own hands!
