Dos & Don’ts of uni

Dos and don’ts of starting university

First of all, congratulations on making into Cardiff University, the next chapter of your life begins now. However, whilst Uni is about finding your own way here are a few tips on how to get the most out of your experience from people who have been in your shoes.

  • Don’t judge your housemates at first glance – Turns out your parents were right never judge a book by its cover. We are all anxious meet our new housemates for the next year, many of us join Facebook chats and WhatsApp groups to gain some insight whilst this is a good move don’t judge people based off of their online persona. Many people are shy online or completely different, wait until you meet them and discover the real person.

  • Do be ready to get homesick- For most of us we’ve lived at home for the majority of our lives going to school then coming home. So, for the first time you might be away from your parents for weeks (even in a new country😂), it’s completely normal to miss your home and friends just keep in constant contact with home and don’t be afraid open up about your issues.

  • Do make time to socialise and find your ‘thing’ to relax – By this it doesn’t mean you have to drink and party all the time at live lounge and pryzm, (although that doesn’t mean you can’t if you want to 🤣) it just means find a way to meet people doing whatever it is that gives you a break from all the university pressures.

  • Do budget your money – Seems obvious but that initial loan will have you thinking you’re rich, but remember to budget because before you know it you’ve maxed out your overdraft (we’ve all been there) and you can’t even buy a pint from the TAF or even a pizza slice at Fattoush 😬. Shop at Lidl over Tesco (you can thank me later), maybe stop the online shopping and try not to spend too much at SU on your 7th VK.

  • Don’t beat yourself up too bad – Uni can be tough both academically and mentally but take it easy, if you need help make sure you talk to your friend’s, lecturers and anyone else who can help. These people are here to help you make sure you don’t internalise your problems. Remember one bad exam, especially in first year, really is not the end of the world.

  • Don’t worry you’ll find your people – It’s tough to say but many people just don’t click with their housemates for whatever reason but don’t let this get you down. There are so many people and so many activities that you just need to put yourself out there and you will find your people and quite a few more.

  • Do try and step out your comfort zone – University is about learning more about yourself. Try new activities meet new people and explore your wonderful new life in Cardiff

So essentially, don’t stress too much, do be friendly and make an effort and go enjoy the next stage of your life at Cardiff University!! 👀👀
